Outdoor Spring Cleaning Tips

When nature’s signposts point to spring, it’s more than a time of celebration. It’s a time to take stock of the exterior condition of your home and property and start lining up your seasonal chores and projects. Here are some pointers to help get you started.

Rain Gutters and Downspouts – Winter weather can do a number on your gutters and downspouts. Be sure they aren’t clogged with leaves, twigs, and debris that could prevent rain from flowing freely and away from your foundation. While you’re at it, check for the potential damage caused by snow or ice.

Exterior Walls – Use a power washer or hose with a jet attachment to clear away cobwebs, dirt, and mud from the sides of your home. In the process, you’re bound to notice any repair issues with your siding or foundation that need to be addressed.

Windows – Clean the outside of your windows or hire a service if you can’t do so safely yourself.

Garage – Get rid of unneeded tools and equipment, toys, and other clutter. Add organizational storage if needed, wipe down shelving units, and sweep the floors. Don’t forget to give squeaky hinges a touch of oil to keep them working smoothly.

Fences – Rake leaves and debris away from the base of your fence and hose it down. Repair or replace any damaged or missing sections and touch up wood fences with stain, paint, or sealant.

Outdoor Entertaining Areas – Get your backyard ready for outdoor entertaining by inspecting and cleaning your deck, patio, grill, and outdoor furniture.

Lawn and Garden – Clean up winter debris, pull out dead annuals, and trim summer-blooming trees and shrubs. Early spring is also a great time to dethatch the lawn and apply spring fertilizer. However, hold off on seeding your lawn until the threat of frost has passed.

Paths and Walkways – Spray away dirt, mud, and salt stains with a power washer or garden hose with a jet attachment. Refill spaces between pavers or bricks with fresh grout, gravel, or sand as needed. And check pathway lighting for signs of damage.
